The emotional bait is clear: Diaz, a child refugee from cartel-ridden chaos, married to a U.S. citizen, finally seeing his visa progress after years of limbo, only to be viciously targeted by lawless ICE agents. A roommate filmed the chaos. The agents reportedly barked, “None of your business,” when asked for identification, then allegedly assaulted Diaz before vanishing him into the system. But as anyone who’s seen enough of these social media morality plays knows, outrage without scrutiny is a dangerous thing. One of the first glaring signs was the inability to respond—replies were disabled on the post, a classic maneuver to control narrative and suppress inconvenient questions. When investigated beyond the viral soundbite, the missing context flips the story.
Martin Diaz isn’t just a DREAMer with paperwork woes. He’s a convicted felon with a serious criminal history, including a rape charge that led to a plea deal, and a later conviction for felony domestic violence. These aren’t minor infractions—they’re violent crimes. As a result, a final deportation order was issued years ago. He appealed, was granted temporary relief, but ultimately lost. He has remained in the country illegally, despite the order, and despite the criminal record.

And yet, media headlines refer to him as a “Spokane man,” downplaying or omitting the criminal history that forms the legal basis for his removal.
This pattern of selective storytelling repeats with other examples cited in the post. Take the “innocent abuela” who was reportedly targeted just for taking a wrong turn. Turns out, she’s been living illegally in the U.S. for twenty years, driving without a license, and entered a military base without proper identification. The “wrong turn” excuse may be a mistake—but it happened in a context of persistent lawbreaking.

And yet, predictably, activists and left-wing organizations rush to denounce ICE entirely. The enforcement agency, tasked with upholding immigration law, is smeared as fascist.
